We did it!

The results are in, and we have won the election for Oakland City Council!

I am humbled and honored by the confidence District 6 voters placed in me yesterday to lead us in realizing our shared vision for a thriving District 6.

Today, I received congratulations from Councilmember Desley Brooks on our victory. I want to thank Councilmember Brooks for her 16 years of service to the City of Oakland, and I wish her well.

I also want to thank the other candidates who ran for this seat: Natasha Middleton, Mya Whitaker, and Marlo Rodriguez. Each one of them loves our city and has so much to offer. I hope to work closely with them in the months and years ahead for the betterment of our community.

To those who supported another candidate, I will work tirelessly over the next four years to earn your trust, and I will need your ideas and your voice in order to move our community forward for all of us.

A huge thank you to my incredible wife Erica and our wonderful kids, Camryn and Manny, who put their love into this campaign. Thank you to my mom, Linda and my brother, Preston, and my entire extended family for all of your hard work. I wouldn’t be here without you.

Thank you to De’Zhon, Tina, Mary, and my incredible staff. Thank you to everyone who donated, walked a precinct, made phone calls, put up a lawn sign, spread the word on social media, and helped power our campaign to victory.

Thank you to everyone who endorsed our campaign, from elected officials, to our faith, health, education, civil rights, and neighborhood leaders, to the labor and community organizations, and local press.

Yesterday, on Election Day, I sent a note out about how inspired I was, by your love for this city and by all of the hard work you have put into this campaign in order to make our city better.

I am even more inspired today. Inspired by the chance to make change with you. The chance to make our city a place where longtime Oaklanders and the next generation can afford to stay and thrive. To ensure we have good jobs for everyone. To finally do something to end the moral crisis of homelessness. To attract more community banks and grocery stores, and to improve community policing.

Now, we will move forward in a spirit of transparency, responsibility, and respect, with a fierce focus on solving our toughest challenges. And together, we’ll make a difference for everyone here in District 6, East Oakland, and across our city.

This victory belongs to all of you. It has been a team effort throughout this entire campaign just as it will be over the next four years. I look forward to the great things we will do together for our District and city.

Thank you so much again. Onward!
